Cottonwood Valley

Steady and contemplative, Cottonwood Valley is reminiscent of music from eras past. Rich, accapella harmonies lend themselves to a musical  landscape that is at once new, yet strangely familiar.

ROOM

ROOM is the first single from Chicago-based sister duo Lilla Sol.

ROOM grapples with the fog of depression and a toppled sense of self, inviting the listener to consider whether we care for ourselves the way we care for others.

Surging synths and strings accompany lush vocal harmonies to provide a haunting topography for the lead vocals to dance across.

Lyrics

Cottonwood Valley

Your momma called today
Saying, take it all away
I would rather see them worn
Than gathering dust in drawers

Four years since the day
The earth called you away
And the waves were strong and blue
As you drifted from the shore

The cottonwood trees
Sent us early snow in summer
And they laid a blanket white
For you to walk upon

An orchid’s purple blooms
Floated round your head like halos
And you danced beneath the dogwoods
As their yellow flowers grew

Your momma called today
Saying, take it all away
I’d rather see them worn

Endless Summer

I drove to Michigan
in search of a light I’d lost
The weight of a heavy cross
riding on my back
Searching far and wide for some saving grace
For the one,
to bring me,
out of this headspace

How time does fly.

Don't wake me up
I couldn't sleep last night
for fear the morning light
would hurt my eyes
Pour me
a cup
of coffee black as night,
so I can feel my insides burn

I’m scared to love too deeply
scared that everyone I love might leave me
These fears,
they keep on feeding
hard to tell if I’m awake or dreaming

I wish I could phone you.

I wish I could hold you.

Are you out there?
Can you hear me?
I've been holding on to friendships that keep on bleeding me
it’s traces of you I seek
We’ve run out of shared memories
it’s time to let them go
I thought I’d let you know

Don't wake me up
I couldn't sleep last night
for fear the morning light
would hurt my eyes
Pour me
a cup
of coffee black as night,
so I can feel my insides burn

How do I
How do I, how do I
How do I breathe?
Without you here?
How can I
How can I, how can I
How can I see straight?
Without you here?
Well I don’t want to sleep alone tonight

(your Honda CRV
the chi rides down Lake Street
your blonde hair and beauty
Frank Ocean
Swisher Sweets
and Lollapalooza
with mud caked in bed sheets
the sun tans
and Weekndit replays
to no end…)

Room

Take me to a room, where I can be alone
And use this beating heart to find my way home

Please don't look at me like I'm crazy
because I
don't pretend like I'm great all the time
Aren't you tired of trying so hard?

Take me to a room where I can be alone
(take me, take me, to a room)
And use this beating heart to find my way home
(take me, take me, to a room)

I've got to get out to figure this all out
(don't let yourself down)
How can you know yourself when all you do is doubt?
(don't let yourself down)
Well doctor please give me a new brain, this one's driving me insane
(don't let yourself down)

But please don't look at me like I'm crazy
because I
don't pretend like I'm great all the time
Aren't you tired of lying to yourself?

Take me to a room where I can be alone
(take me, take me, to a room)
And use this beating heart to find my way home
(take me, take me, to a room)

Take me to a room where I can be alone
To find the space in my heart that is my own

Biography

Lilla Sol is a Chicago-based sister duo that creates genre blending music rooted in storytelling. For these sisters, music is a means of cathartic expression; a key to deeper understanding of both personal and shared experiences. Their sound explores sonic realms that include piano, synth, cello, guitar, and lush vocal harmonies.

Sisters Eva and Arden B. were previously members of the indie-pop trio Moonrise Nation, touring the country to play festivals and venues such as SXSW, Electric Forest, Stubbs BBQ, 7th Street Entry, The Gramercy Theater, and Millenium Park. Lilla Sol marks a new beginning for this sister duo after a 6-year hiatus from the Chicago music scene. Lilla Sol’s music serves as a conduit for deep emotions, and a reminder that even in moments of extreme destabilization we can find our ground through connection to one another and the universe.
